OUTLIERS: ARE THEY GOOD OR BAD?

Be sure to read the verbal exchange in this cartoon (drawn by Ben Shabad). It’s important to note what the poorly-trained researcher and the outlier are saying. It looks as if this researcher—the one holding the eraser—doesn’t want to hear the outlier’s “message.” Unfortunately, many real researchers make the same mistake and see in their data only the things they hoped would be there.
