Read this full comic strip (from by R. Munroe, then focus on the 3rd panel. It is instructive. The graph is a “box-and-whisker plot,” a way to summarize a group of scores. Here, the baseline represents how much time the guy spends with his female friends, with higher scores on the right. The gray box’s width shows the middle 50% of scores, with the vertical line = median. The lines extending left/right from the box can be set up according to different rules, but they always indicate where most or all of the higher and lower scores lie. Any score beyond these “whiskers” is shown as a dot, and it is deemed to be an “outlier.”
